HONOLULU – The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, affectionately known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” proudly unveils its newest gem: The Royal Hawaiian Historic Gallery. Opened in November, this thoughtfully curated space celebrates the rich heritage of one of Waikiki's most iconic landmarks.
An Immersive Journey Through History
Located within the resort, the 520-square-foot gallery invites guests and visitors to step back in time and explore nearly a century of exceptional hospitality and timeless elegance. From its grand opening in 1927 to its enduring role as a symbol of Hawaiian charm, the gallery offers a captivating glimpse into The Royal Hawaiian's storied past.
As part of this initiative, Matson Navigation Company, the original developer of the resort, has contributed images from its Matson Vintage Art collection and archival photographs — curated by archivist Lynn Blocker Krantz — featuring historic pieces that celebrate the partnership between Matson and The Royal Hawaiian in shaping Hawaii's hospitality industry.
Gallery Highlights Include:
- A detailed timeline tracing The Royal Hawaiian's journey from its groundbreaking in 1925 to today.
- Fashion Through the Decades, showcasing the evolution of resort style over the years.
- A tribute to the Opening Night Gala, complete with silverware bearing the Matson logo, allowing visitors to relive the splendor of this landmark celebration.
- Rare historic photographs capturing the resort's construction and transformation through time.

“The gallery tells the story of The Royal Hawaiian's enduring legacy and celebrates the Pink Palace of the Pacific as an icon of Waikiki” says General Manager Nicole Okuna. “It's our way of honoring the past while connecting current and future generations to the timeless spirit of The Royal Hawaiian.”
