Indianapolis, the home of the world's fast bicycle rider, Major Taylor, is investing more than $150 million into its trail infrastructure. A comprehensive Central Indiana trails project is underway to include development of new parks along the White Riverway, new trails and cultural initiatives.

America's Best City to Explore by Bike

Downtown Indy, known for its flat terrain and bike-friendly environment, is home to the newly expanded 10-mile Indianapolis Cultural Trail. The expanded trail network connects key landmarks, including Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, and the Madam Walker Legacy Center along Indiana Avenue. Additionally, the program includes a fleet of 325 e-bikes and offers complimentary rentals to residents, making Indy the first city in the country to implement such a program.

With connection to various trailheads, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail now connects to the Pogue's Run Trail via the Monon Trail, which is a 5.3-mile stretch of trail on the northside of Indy.

New Parks and Trails Along the White Riverway

Last year, a nearly 5-mile stretch of the B&O Trail, connecting White River State Park to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was unveiled. Indy is also adding two new parks set to open along the White Riverway this year:

  • Riverside Adventure Park, will include a nature-themed playground, picnic shelters, and trails, providing a family-friendly space with access to the White River.
  • Fishers White River Park, will offer over two miles of trails, a kayak launch, scenic boardwalks, and a creek stomping area, ideal for nature enthusiasts.

Upcoming Openings

  • Nickel Plate Trail: This 18-mile trail will provide a vital connection between the city and suburban areas, enhancing accessibility for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians. The trail promises to be a key addition to the city's growing network of outdoor spaces and will play an essential role in connecting Indy with surrounding communities.
  • Black Heritage & Legacy Trail: To celebrate the city's rich cultural history, Indy will launch the Black Heritage & Legacy Trail this year, timed with the 160th Anniversary of Juneteenth. This trail will feature interactive Heritage Markers across three neighborhoods, highlighting significant African American sites, figures, and events. Free Heritage & Legacy Walks will be available for visitors to explore these landmarks and learn about the cultural impact of the African American community in Indianapolis.

The culmination of the comprehensive Central Indiana Trail project is timed with America's 250th birthday in 2026. The project will unveil more resources and amenities for trail users, making Indy one of the most connected cities in the country.
