According to the World Health Organization (WHO), noise has become the second largest environmental cause of health problems after air pollution.
In a noisy everyday life, full of traffic, background music, and smartphones, we are becoming increasingly aware of the health benefits that silence provides. This can also influence the way we travel.
Acceptable noise levels, as defined by the WHO, are now being exceeded in cities worldwide. About 40% of the population in EU countries is exposed to road traffic noise at levels exceeding 55 db.
A tourism survey conducted by Innovation Norway shows that the silence in Norwegian nature is one of the most valued elements among foreign tourists. Furthermore, it reveals that the main motivations for exploring Norwegian nature and culture are a desire for peace and tranquility (66%).
Live noise measurements
– "We cannot solve the major challenges of noise pollution alone, but we can help shed light on the issue and also inspire people to find their quiet spaces. I believe most of us could benefit from a vacation where we completely disconnect from hustle and noise and reconnect with what is real and close," says Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Voyages.
Havila Voyages has placed sound measurement stations at several locations along the Norwegian coast and presents live sound measurements on their website. Sound levels are also compared to those of major international cities.
To emphasize this further, in addition to the sound measurements, they have created a Spotify playlist with sounds recorded along the entire Norwegian coast, like «Birds singing by the river in Øye», «Rowing in calm water in Geiranger» and «Sheep grazing in Florø».
Offers Health Benefits
Research shows that silence and natural sounds can provide a range of health benefits. When the mind and body calm down, positive chemicals are released in the brain, boosting the immune system and improving our overall health.
The calmcation trend reflects a growing interest in travel experiences that contrast more sharply with everyday life, bringing us closer to both nature and ourselves. The natural sounds that Norway offers are seen as a unique attraction and a break from everyday noise. Therefore, the Norwegian costal cruise company Havila Voyages has created a dedicated noise-reporting service, where they highlight noise — or rather, the absence of it.
– "We know that sound levels are directly linked to our sense of well-being. As quiet places become rarer, this forecast can be a tool to show us where we can find just that", Martini says.
Maintaining peace and tranquility has also been a key focus in the design of Havila Voyages' ships.
– "On board our ships, you will still be able to experience that calm and silence. Compared to ships running on traditional fossil fuels, our liquified natural gas and battery-powered ships give you a much more silent cruise experience. It reinforces the impressions from nature and the calm the areas we operate in gives you”, concludes Martini.
Facts:
- Acceptable noise levels, as defined by the World Health Organization, are now being exceeded in cities worldwide. This leads to heart attacks, concentration difficulties, sleep problems, and a general reduction in quality of life.
- About 40% of the population in EU countries is exposed to road traffic noise at levels exceeding 55 db.
- An EU study estimates that 22 million people live with chronic stress caused by noise and that constant noise leads to around 12,000 premature deaths in Europe each year.
- Norway's coastal areas, particularly in the fjords, are naturally sheltered from urban and industrial noise. The rugged cliffs, deep fjords, and remote islands create natural sound barriers, preserving the quiet.
- Norway has strict noise pollution regulations in many areas, especially around natural sites and protected landscapes, helping to preserve the quiet coastal environment for locals and visitors alike.
- Havila Voyages operates the classical coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes, with 4 new-built ship. The ships run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and have large battery packs installed. They can operate up to 4 hours at the time, completely emission-free and silent using batteries.
